Cost of Heating a Scary Thought

This past winter, I cringed everytime I got the bill for the heating oil delivery. It averaged around $500-$600. It used to be around $300 a couple of years ago. I'm not looking forward to seeing what it will be this winter. Dh is thinking of ways to heat up our house this year. Having a pellet stove installed is one but then he read on the local paper that the store that sells these kind of stoves has a waiting list already. They won't be able to deliver these until February of next year. What else can we use as an alternative heat source? We have a fireplace but that would not heat up the whole house. We want something that will be cost-effective and green at the same time. I hope dh doesn't procrastinate on this one or else I'm not going to be a happy camper everytime I pay that oil bill.

  1. I know how you feel! We have terrible insulation or something because our heating bill is atrocious.

  2. I saw a commercial about that kind of insulation that's almost like foam that they blow into the wall. They said that it insulates more than the regular fiber-insulation. Our local energy company actually has a free service where they come to the house and make suggestions on making it more energy efficient. They check for drafts, etc. You might want to ask if they have the same program where you are.

  4. Yeah, before for know it, it's winter again! Last year, aside from the heater and the fireplace, we also bought a thermostat and it helps warm our room.
